A Europe and the World Special Series.

This Europe and the World: A law review special series comprises selected papers presented at a RENFORCE workshop on the theme of tensions between the EU’s trade and non-economic values, held at Utrecht University in November 2017. The EU’s ambition to combine its trade policy with the pursuit of non-economic values and objectives has given rise to both normative dilemmas and institutional tensions. The papers included in the symposium unveil such normative and institutional tensions within the fields of climate change, energy security, sustainable fishing, human rights, and the rule of law. As highlighted in the symposium contributions, the negotiating processes of the EU’s trade agreements or other trade-related instruments provide a unique venue for the EU’s institutions, member states, and other stakeholders to express their relative weight given to economic and non-economic values. Such processes incrementally develop a set of mechanisms and instruments to accommodate non-economic values in the EU’s trade policy, and, furthermore, create the opportunities for EU institutions to be an active normative player at the global level.
