Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between the water absorption coefficient and three key hygrothermal properties, thermal conductivity, bulk density, and water vapour resistance, in traditional solid bricks from buildings constructed between the 1850s and 1920s in the UK. A total of 76 brick samples representing 10 types were tested using standard methods. Statistical analyses revealed that the absorption coefficient exhibits measurable negative correlations with the other three properties, with the strongest correlation observed with water vapour resistance. These findings suggest that the absorption coefficient, due to its ease of measurement, can serve as a practical indicator for estimating broader hygrothermal performance. The results provide a basis for efficient material characterization in retrofit planning and contribute to a future UK database of traditional masonry properties.
